Christmas Road Trip 2010

Two holidays, three destinations, ... one Toyota Corolla... 1,850 miles. We're borrowing my sister's car, a 4 door Corolla (4 doors!!!), and packing up to hit the road just a couple days before Christmas. First stop, Jackson Mississippi to spend Christmas weekend with Grandmama, Mr.Grant and Lynn, Sister Seale and Matt and allll the rest of the wonderful Grant family. Then it's on to Chattanooga (Hixon) Tennessee to see Sister Cayte and Jacky in their new home. Which is conveniently on the way to Gatlinburg Tennessee, where we'll ring in the new year with friends Jon + Clair and Chelsey + Taylor (and Hammy cat). Chelsey's parents have a cabin in the mountains with just enough space for a memorable New Year's gathering.

Now... I hope we survive to post pictures and stories from this adventure.

Found the Marches!

For those of you who have met the unforgettable Caree March, you can now catch up with her and Andy online! I've added their blog to my blogging buddies, visit them here andycaree.wordpress.com. I keep asking people how they're doing and today I got this Christmas postcard with more info. If you haven't met the Marches, let me just say they passionately live for Jesus and are inspiration in servant-hood. Upon moving from their 2BR apt in Rogers Park, where they attended RPCC, to their Florida - they took on parenting 6 foster teenage girls. They can't post photos on the blog, but I'll just bet it's something to see!

Gracie D is 1 year old!

Our little niece, Gracie D, turned one year last week! She's the cutest one year old little girl I know and her parents, John and Ashley, gave her one sweet birthday party last weekend. I wanted to share pics from the day taken by my sister in law's brother in law, Shawn. A day celebrating with family is a reminder of all the support we have as new parents. There are three babies in the family now - Grace, Eli, and David - and that means three first-time moms. All the women on the D side are dear to my heart and no matter what stage of life, we're tied to one another as sisters in Christ. Then there's the men who keep us grounded and yet turn to mush over these sweet babies!

We got Grace a set of pjs from old navy and the handmade stuffed owl. Ashley made incredible chocolate candy cane cookies from a pioneer woman recipe. She also had out snowflake sugar cookies, icecream and cherry cupcakes. To make the cherry cupcakes, start with a white cake mix and add the juice from the Maraschino cherry jar... oh dear, I can't really remember the rest. But the icing was regular vanilla just tinted with food coloring and maybe chopped cherry bits.

Penguins

Fellow mom friend and blogger, Katheryn, and I got together with our babies this past week and made stuffed penguins! We normally gather the little ones for 'stare dates', but with them growing like weeds, we're embarking on what looks to be 'play dates'. Katheryn's little girl Miriam and David are 'sharing' toys and reaching for each other's faces more and more! This date we had a specific craft mission to make stuffed penguins inspired by Katheryn's imitation penguin, Miriam. I've included the pattern that we made and used to create our little birds. If you make this at home, I suggest making the penguin body overall larger than the pattern, just to give you a fuller penguin look.

Bumper Sticker Rebuttals: Part 1

Over the past 3 years I (Tripp) have had a 20 mile commute within the great city of Chicago. In this time, it’s become clear that for many people, their cars are their sounding board, and their opinions must be put on them for others to read. For them, this is a safe soap box. Many see their opinion or bold claim, but few would ever have any opportunity to challenge it. Here, I will correct that, and to several that I’ve read, I have something to say in response. The first is here:

God is too big to fit into one religion.

Initially this statement seems to be giving God a grand compliment, commenting on
how vast He is, and He is indeed bigger than we could ever imagine. However, in this
statement, “exclusive” religions become the bad guys, and they are shown as belittling
God by limiting who He is. The first problem with this statement is that it makes these
religions out to be some type of jars or containers that may come in various shapes
and sizes. God is then viewed as some type of liquid form that can be poured out and
distributed into each of these jars. He then like a liquid would conform to the shape
of each jar filling each nook and crevice of the interior. This view, in turn, is not
complimentary to God, but in fact makes Him out to be subject to man and its views of
Him, as though we can define Him as we wish. But the truth is that, God has an eternal
being, and His character is forever perfect and unchanged. Though He is vast beyond
measure, He already has a shape (for lack of better words), and will be conformed by
nothing. He consequently does not “fit into” any and every religion or vague view of
who He is, but can only be defined by His own revelation to the extent that He wishes
to share it. The good news is that He does want to be known, and has set forth His
revelation of Himself as recorded through the Holy Scriptures of the Bible.

I recognize that this claim is loaded, as one may in turn also believe that God is too
big to fit into the Bible, which would make yet another very clever bumper sticker.
Nonetheless, the Bible is an accurate portrayal of who God is, and yet, by no means
does it belittle Him. This should be considered practically. On my bookshelf I have a
biography of General Robert E. Lee. It is by no stretch of the imagination an exhaustive
record of all of the accounts of his entire life, nor does it describe to the most minute
detail every trait or aspect of his personality. And yet, it is a very good biography, and
it tells the reader everything he or she needs to know to understand who Robert E. Lee
is, how he lived, and the big picture of what he did. So, Robert E. Lee is not “too big”
for this biography, and in a similar way the Bible is sufficient in what it has to say to us
about God. Though now we do “see in part” and “know in part”, we are given enough
information through the Bible to understand His character accurately.

It is also important to note that the god we see in the Bible is distinctly different than
the “god” of Islam, or “gods” of Buddhism, Hinduism, Daoism, or any other religion.
As much as many today may like to think that these could all be various interpretations
of the same god (a singular God), they are not. These religions all describe separate and
distinct entities that are often not compatible with each other, and are certainly not one

in the same with the one true God. It is not a new concept in history for man to honor
other “gods” or even to seek God in other things or entities. In both the Old and New
Testament God confronts this and distinguishes himself from these false idols or gods,
renouncing the worship of them as evil and fruitless. Thus, making it clear that there is
only one God, and all other gods are false. That one God will not be defined by man, and
He is not open for interpretation, but only is as He is, the one and only, the great I Am.

Snow Day Owls/Bats

This weekend, we were lucky enough to have dear friends and fellow blogger Hana and her husband and baby boy visiting from Wisconsin. Thanks to whiteout snow conditions, we got to have an extra day with them and one big snow day weekend. Weeks ago, we had discussed taking on the potterybarn owls as a diy on the cheap. Our fabrics combined, we each made and owl (see green/blue owl on right) which ended up looking more like a bat. That's David's owl. Then handy friend Clair, and fellow blogger, joined us and sourced a helpful pattern. Grace's girly owl (see pink/brown on left) is totally adorable for my totally adorable niece. If you have a few paper sized scraps of fabric, use this pattern and give it a go! (I added triangle cuts out of the pupils, made them slightly smaller and added a white pupil piece behind it.)

Morning coffee, CIO, and handmade blog

This morning I reheated Monday's coffee, in a sweet cup from my friend Chelsey, to the trying sounds of a little CIO. According to baby lingo, CIO= cry it out. During David's 4 month visit to the doctor, we were informed it is now safe and maybe even helpful to allow crying in the crib. I've given it a go a few times now and so far it's most successful at naptime, crying lasts at most 10 minutes. Bedtime is still a challenge. He either goes down fast or pushes the bounds of CIO so much we've just got to hold the guy. As torturous as CIO sounds, I am glad when it works and stumped when it doesn't. And that about sums up baby tricks for you!

While looking for this gorgeous image of a coffee cup, I stumbled upon this incredible blog of handmade accessories! Love to browse etsy, but seeing all these pretty things in one line up is much fun too! Now, if only I didn't have such a love/hate relationship with my sewing machine...

Eggnog Cookies

Had a hankering for holiday cookies and a carton of eggnog in the fridge. After perusing allrecipes.com , my favorite place for recipe help, I found a few recipes for eggnog cookies. Taking one of the feedback suggestions, the cookies turned out SOFT and delicious. As long as you keep them in a container after day 1, they'll get even yummier.

  • 1/2 c. white sugar
  • 3/4 cups brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup eggnog
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Oven 300. Bowl 1: Combine flour, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg with wisk. Bowl 2 (big): With a mixer, cream sugar and butter until light. Add eggnog, vanilla, and egg yolks; beat at medium speed until smooth. Add bowl 1 and beat at low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.

Drop by teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet 1 inch apart. Bake 17-20, or until fork comes out clean from cookie. Cookies will not turn brown on top.

Some allrecipers said to frost with yellow tinted frosting for a more holiday look. If you've got more time, go for it.

For those of you who aim for a lovely and perfect holiday but just can't seem to iron out the wrinkles: please note the shopvac under our tree. This is to keep our kitty from eating the branches and puking them up on a daily basis. So far, one pine needle puke this season and counting...

Thankful for...

Family! Friends! 5ks! Dairy! and Puzzles! This year we gathered at my parents home again to celebrate the most thankfully delicious holiday of the year. Tripp and I began our holiday on Tuesday, bringing David and his gear for one long sleepover. On Thursday, in keeping with tradition, Tripp and I suited up at 7am for a chilly 5k with Brock and Lindsay and the rest of athletic Naperville. It's exhilarating to hussle with fellow families before the big feast, however the exhileration only lasted about 1.5 miles before Tripp and I took a shortcut back to the car. Next year we'll win that thing!

Joined by the usual suspects, new babies and new loves, our thankful friends and family stretched two full tables. Having cooked a lot of the sides prior (and baker-square catered dessert) Mom and Dad were able to focus on the turkey and it was INCREDIBLE. Thanks to Ina Garten and her inspiring use of truffle butter, that Turkey was the best yet. Normally, I'd be restricted be restricted by David's aversion to dairy, but the boy is cured and I enjoyed everything to the point of stomach ache.

Aside from eating, there was some serious puzzling going on in the basement. Brock had picked up a 1,000 piece puzzle at walmart, but having had the sales associate get and put it straight into the bag, no one was to have the ease of looking at the cover! With the collaboration of an engineer, analyst, accountant, teacher and manufacturer, the puzzle was complete that evening.

This holiday was also marked by David's first meeting with his Aunt Cayte and Uncle Jacky. I've never seen him warm up to a person so much as his Aunt Cayte, but since I believe they share the same eyes, that's just expected! Cayte and Jacky blessed us with 5 days of time together and whole lot of laughs. This was our niece Grace's first thanksgiving as well, and she just gets cuter by the holiday. We're a growing bunch, making this holiday more joyful than ever. Also, mom has a new Keurig which Tripp and I both feel is the bomb.
